A Look Back: Our Arrival in Kansas City, MO

Well, we made it to Kansas! We left the Bay Area on September 1, after many goodbyes and much packing! Neither Catherine or I have lived outside of CA before. It was a 1600 mile road trip in a Penske truck to reach our new home, but we made it. (Mark drove with his father, Catherine & the baby flew) :) We are so excited about our new adventure here at IHOP as a family.

We are beginning our 3 month training program this Monday, September 29th. Since we arrived in our new home, we have been busy unpacking, getting to know the area, and taking care of Nathaniel, who is now 8 months old. We are thankful to have our close friends, Thai & Angela Lam, also living here (about 2 minutes from us!) and working at IHOP. It has been such a blessing to know some familiar faces.

We are so expectant of what God has for us in this new season! We have so enjoyed our times spent in the Prayer Room at IHOP already, and can’t wait for the training program to start. To help you better understand what we will be doing here in Kansas, we would like to tell you a little bit more about IHOP, the International House of Prayer.

In a nutshell, IHOP began as a prayer meeting that started on September 19, 1999 and never stopped. Since that time, night and day, 24/7 worship and prayer has not ceased in what is called The Prayer Room. The numbers have increased- now more than 1,000 young people serve here on staff at the Missions Base. Their vision is to send out at least 5,000 young people throughout the earth to evangelize, serve the poor, and plant houses of prayer. As we mentioned in our last letter, various ministries which have strategic impact in America and other nations of the world also base out of IHOP, such as Luke 18, the Call, the Joseph Company, and One Thing.

We would like to highlight Luke 18 for a moment. Luke 18 is a ministry that seeks to plant houses of prayer in cities and on college campuses around the world. In particular, a house of prayer is beginning here at Kansas University, headed up by Thai & Angela. KU is the home of the famous Jayhawks, the 2008 NCAA men’s basketball champions. We’d like to share with you a little bit about what happened this past Friday evening at a campus meeting we were part of, as written by Thai:

“Last night was a powerful night at KU. We had nearly 40 people at our meeting, and God really showed up. After the meeting concluded, we all headed over to a local pool to do baptisms. We were so excited as 25 students huddled around the gate of the pool to watch as 3 of their fellow students make a public declaration of their faith as they were getting baptized! One had gotten saved 1.5 weeks prior, and the other 2 students had not planned on getting baptized but decided to 1/2 hour before the baptisms!”

God is on the move everywhere we go like I’ve never seen before! The meeting that was mentioned above only began about 4 weeks ago- God has already brought 40 people and saved one student! That is incredible and we are so blessed to be a small part of what is happening.

In our training program, we will be covering topics such as preaching with power, intimacy with Christ and encountering God more deeply through prayer and study of the Word. We will also participate in a small group on Wednesday evenings, as well as serve in the weekend services that IHOP holds on Friday and Saturday evenings, and two services on Sundays. In addition, we will spend 15-20 hours a week in the Prayer Room.

God’s timing is truly amazing. We believe that He has called us out to IHOP for such a time as this, and we look forward to finding out specifically what He has for us as a family, and to be further trained & equipped to accomplish whatever He has for us.

We would like to thank each one of you that helped us get to IHOP. We so appreciate you believing in us enough to pray for us and support us financially. We could not have come without your support, and we are so excited to see what God does in us and through us because of our time here. Without you, the equipping we will receive here, and the future lives we will touch because of it, would not be possible.

Because of your generosity, we were able to raise nearly 57 percent of our goal in a very short period of time. We still have much to go, but we are confident in God’s provision.

Thank you again, each one of you, for your love, prayers and financial support. We look forward to updating you all on everything that takes place in our lives during this awesome time in God’s Kingdom!

All our love,

Mark, Catherine, and Nathaniel Slezinger
